What is a Kachina Doll?

What Is A Kachina Doll?
- There are three aspects of a Kachina:
1. The supernatural being as he exists in the mind
of humans. (Kachina)
2. The masked impersonator of the supernatural
being. (Kachina)
3. The small dolls carved with the same
significance and likeness of
the masked impersonator.
(Kachina Doll)
When a man wearing the appropriate costume and body paint places a
mask on his head, he believes he receives the spirit of the Kachina he
represents, losing his own personal identity. As a Kachina, he is then able
to carry the prayers given to him by the people to the Gods.
In order to become familiar with the Kachinas, children are given Kachina
dolls carved of cottonwood root by their fathers and uncles. These are not
toys, but
treasured objects to be studied by the children so that they might
become
familiar with the appearance of each Kachina. The Kachina dolls
are not idols
to be worshipped or icons to be prayed to, but only objects
for use in the
religious education of the children.
